Red Bulls advance to section team semis

WORTHINGTON - The Section 3AA, South Sub-Section No. 2-seeded Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls pinned a 55-13 team-meet quarterfinal loss on the No. 3-seeded New Ulm Eagles during Section 3AA wrestling action on Tuesday night in Worthington.

The Red Bulls (12-4) advance to face Class AA, No. 9-ranked and North Sub-Section No. 1-seeded Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle/Montevideo United in the sectional team semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday in Granite Falls.

New Ulm finished its season with a 12-12 record.

The Red Bulls earned seven pins on their way to the sectional victory on Tuesday.

The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead after Sean Howk pinned Christian Hugget in 3:56 at 106 pounds.

Collin Steuber and Chris Ettesvold then bounced the Red Bulls back on top with the first of 11 match victories.

Steuber pinned 113-pounder Hunter Ranweiler in 3:43, before Ettesvold shut out Ryan Wacker 2-0 at 120 pounds.

Mario Maldonado then followed that with a 10-0 win over New Ulm's Taylor Bode, before Christopher Krenz pinned Austin Iles at 2:19 in the 132-pound match.

Austin Brandes snapped the Red Bulls' winning streak by claiming a 12-4 major decision over Levi Bulfer in the 138-pound match, before the Red Bulls responded with three straight wins.

Elijah Gronewold outlasted the Eagles' Jagger Hoffman in a 3-2 decision, before Class AA, No. 8-ranked 152-pounder Joe Weber pinned Matt Deslauries at 3:27 in the 152-pound match.

The Red Bulls' Tanner Lange then completed the trifecta with a pin of Riley Shelgren in 2:02 at 160 pounds.

Nathan Gillis, Kory Brown, Luis Figueroa and Adrian Moscoffian combined for the final four match victories for the Red Bulls.

Gillis pinned Cole Wilfahrt at 2:27 in the 182-pound match, before Kory Brown downed Lorenzo Hernandez in a 5-1 decision.

Figueroa and Moscoffian then scored back-to-back pins, with Figueroa pinning Braxton Greenwaldt in 5:11 and Moscoffian downing Nathan Berg in 4:17 at 220 and 285 pounds, respectively.

Sam Hoppe took the last of the Eagles three victories at 170 pounds, beating Harley Luhmann in a 5-1 decision.
