Highway 15 upgrade slated

February 1, 2014

FAIRMONT - Highway 15 north of Fairmont will undergo a month-long resurfacing project this summer.

Minnesota Department of Transportation's 10-year projects list includes an overlay for an 11-mile stretch of Highway 15 from north of Interstate 90 to the Martin/Watonwan County line.

Rebecca Arndt, a public affairs coordinator for the department, said the project is tentatively scheduled for August, but could continue into September.

"The overlay is tied to another project in Brown County," she said. "So it's being done as one project, so the [work] would begin once the Brown County one is finished."

While the construction will slow traffic, the road will remain open.

"There will be no detours; we would need a lot more advance planning for that," Arndt said. "It can be done with traffic controls such as pilot cars and flagmen."

The $5.1 million project mostly will address the current pavement condition, but also will include improving the roadside infrastructure, traveler safety, and bicycle and accessible pedestrian infrastructure.

"It will include shoulder work and some ADA work in Truman," Arndt said. "Anytime we go through town now, we address accessibilities to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act."

Elsewhere, the department will work on several bridges on Interstate 90 in Faribault County this summer.

"It's just at that age where we have to do something ... I-90 has been below par for some years now, which is why MNDOT is very intent on bringing them up to snuff," Arndt said.

After the Highway 15 overlay, the next big state projects scheduled for Martin County will be in 2017, with an I-90 overlay from the Jackson/Martin County line to Highway 4, while Highway 15 will get an overlay and rehab through Fairmont from Johnson Street to Interstate 90.

The department also lists tentative projects from 2018-20 that include work on I-90 between highways 4 and 15, and resurfacing of Highway 263, which runs from Welcome to Ceylon.
