To the Editor:
It seems that every time you turn around you see another solicitation for a food shelf drive. December is a hard time to give something as many are trying to save the extra cash to spend on their Christmas gifts and meals of their own.
And yet many of us recognized a need for Heaven's Table Food Shelf and have been assisting the last couple years with volunteering and donations.
Last December, I put together a quick drive to make a collection. We were able to gather 112 pounds of food, $125 in cash and three $20 gift cards.
This year, I wanted to do better and knew we could. So we - Avery Weigh-Tronix employees through AWTX Volunteers - organized a committee and set some goals of $2,013 and 2,013 pounds. We came up with a variety of ways to raise money and awareness in the community.
ITW (Illinois Tool Works, our parent corporation) provides incentives for matching gifts, and volunteering encourages us to be involved in our communities. The spirit of giving has been captured this year and I want to thank you for your efforts to have Fairmont Weigh-Tronix employees involved in the community and with the Heaven's Table Food Shelf.
The food we collected this year totaled 659 pounds. We also collected $3,200. The dollars really do assist the food shelf as it can order food from Second Harvest and other programs designed to stretch the buying power.
The bonus we have available to us as an ITW employee is the 3:1 match for qualifying donations. From what we were able to keep track of, and if everyone has submitted the documentation, this would be an additional $6,025.
Again, I thank you for your support.
