Packers shut out Cardinals

AUSTIN - Austin eighth-grader Myia Hoium netted a hattrick to pace the Packers to a 3-0 nonconference hockey victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Tuesday in Austin.

While the Packers fired 15 shots on goal in the first period, Cardinal netminder Sadie Sandersfeld kept the game scoreless, stopping all the shots to keep game scoreless.

Hoium then found the net just 3 minutes and 11 seconds into the second period, using a Sam Grunewald assist to stake a 1-0 lead.

Less than three minutes later, Hoium then smacked a Chloe Summerfield assist into the net for a 2-0 lead going into the third.

Despite the Cardinals firing 19 of their 32 shots on net during the third period, Mara Overby blocked them all to take home a shutout.

Hoium completed her hattrick on a power play goal with 35 seconds left in the game with another assist from Grunewald.

Sandersfeld stopped 37 of the Packers 40 shots on goal for the Cardinals, while Overby finished with 32 saves for the Packers.

Fairmont Area (3-5, 0-2) plays host to Worthington in a 7 p.m. nonconference game next Tuesday at Martin County Arena.

Luverne 13, Fairmont Area 0 - The Luverne Cardinals erupted for 13 goals as they blanked the Fairmont Area Cardinals in nonconference action on Tuesday night in Luverne.

Gunnar Olson and Jordan Dingmann each netted individual hattricks to pace Luverne's winning efforts.

In addition to their goals, Olson and Dingmann also doled out two and one assist on tallies as well.

Jaxon Nelson also had a four-point night at the rink, scoring two goals and netting two assists for Luverne.

Fairmont Area netminder Colton Cunning stopped 53 of Luverne's 66 shots on goal, while the visiting Cardinals fired just nine shots on net.

Fairmont (0-3, 0-2) travels for a 12:45 p.m. nonconference game against the Sioux Falls Flyers at W.H. Lyons Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls.
