FAIRMONT - Get ready for some holiday cheer from Six Appeal, a "punny" six-man a cappella group performing Friday at Fairmont Opera House.
Six Appeal's Home for the Holidays show includes parodies like "Santa Marmalade" instead of "Lady Marmalade," traditional carols, both sacred and secular, and contemporary and classic pop hits.
"People should expect to have a good, fun time, just a lot of laughs," said vocalist Jordan Roll. "We do a lot with our parodies, but a lot of the fun comes from audience interaction. Plus, I don't want to give anything away, but they might see some ugly Christmas sweaters."
Roll is one of two founding members who have remained with the group since its inception at Concordia College in 2006. His degree is in opera performance, but the formation of Six Appeal took him in a new direction.
"It started as a hobby and turned into something we wanted to be a full-time job," Roll said.
"We're punny folks," he said. "... Anyone who goes into a capella has a very cheesy sense of humor that goes with the genre. Our name shows the kind of humor we use, but our show also provides a full entertainment experience for folks, from laughs to tender moments."
Based out of St. Paul, Six Appeal is comprised of Roll, Michael Brookens, Trey Jones, Nathan Hickey, Reuben Hushagen and Andrew Berkowitz.
Using no instruments but their voices, the singers create the lush harmonies associated with a cappella men's groups, while the beatboxer provides the percussion using just his mouth.
It might look easy on television shows like Glee, where people are pictured spontaneously break out into song, complete with complex harmony, but there's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, Roll said.
"That's not how it happens for anyone, ever. That's all fake. We've been touring together full-time about two years ... and before that it was basically years and years of practice and honing our crafts," he said.
Their hard work had paid off. In 2012, Six Appeal was named the national champions at the Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival.
