Red Rock plans 100th show

December 4, 2013

FAIRMONT - Red Rock Center for the Arts in Fairmont is searching for area artists to feature at a milestone show in February.

According to Sonja Fortune, executive director at Red Rock, individual artists have been featured each month since 2005, and February will mark the 100th show.

"We mostly focus on area artists," Fortune said. "We have had some out of the area, but most have been regional."

In almost eight years of the "Artist of the Month" program at Red Rock, there has been only one instance with the same artist being featured twice.

The February show will provide an opportunity for those artists to showcase their works again, but Fortune also hopes to draw individuals who have not been featured in the past or who would be more comfortable having their work displayed with that of others.

"I've discovered some great artists, but they're closet artists," she said. "They're hiding, and we're hoping to really draw out some of those people."

"Seasons on the Prairie" is the theme for the show, and artists should submit work that best relates to that theme.

"Any medium is acceptable -paints, photography, sculpture, ceramics," Fortune said.

While previously featured artists may display their work, entry guidelines for the show state that artwork cannot have been on display in the past at Red Rock. Artists also must be 18 years of age or older and live within 50 miles of Fairmont.

The show will run from Feb. 2-27, but it will not be a juried event. There will be a people's choice award, and some of the artwork displayed will be available for sale.

In addition to celebrating the 100th showing, Fortune has a secondary goal - the development of an artists' guild. Such an organization was active in the area in the 1980s, she said, but it no longer exists.

Now that Red Rock has become a "home" for area artists to display their creations, she hopes bringing them together for a show will inspire them to merge their creative forces and form a guild.
