Donald G. Barnes was born May 31, 1937, in Fairmont, Minn., the son of Lowell and Doris (Squire) Barnes. He grew up on his parents' farm east of Granada, Minn., and graduated from Granada High School in 1956. On Sept. 3, 1960, Don was united in marriage to Alice Balcom in Fairmont, Minn. At age 19, Don began driving semi truck for Rosen Livestock, where he grew to love the trucking industry. He worked several jobs in gas stations, at Park Motor, and as a veterinary assistant; but his first love always took him back to the big trucks. Don owned and operated his own trucks in the 1960s. The family later moved to St. Paul where Don hauled U.S. mail for 10 years and, in 1976, they moved back to Martin County to the family farm. Along with farming, Don drove truck part-time for Meyer Livestock in East Chain and M.T. Nawrocki Trucking. In 1995, Don again became a truck owner/operator and hauled rendering for Darling International and still managed the farm until his retirement.

Don was a member of the East Chain United Methodist Church and held various offices including Board Chairman and Trustee. He was also a member of the National Corn Growers Association and the National Rifleman's Association. Don loved collecting model toy trucks and farm machinery and was also the caretaker of Center Creek Cemetery for many years.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 53 years, Alice Barnes of Granada, Minn.; children, Brian (Cindy) Barnes of Fairmont, Minn., Troy (Susan) Barnes of Fairmont, Minn., Kevin (Sheri) Barnes of River Falls, Wis., Gary (Kim) Barnes of Belle Plaine, Minn., and Dean (Beka) Barnes of Woodbury, Minn.; foster-son, Bill (Michelle) Gustafson of Amery, Wis.; grandchildren, Brittany, Justin, Lera, Abby, Amber, Elliot, Naomi, Cecelia, and Elias; brother, Richard (Faye) Barnes of Spotsylvania, Va.; sisters-in-law, Judy Balcom of Fairmont, Minn., and Beverly (Bob) Blazejak of Fairmont, Minn.; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell and Doris Barnes; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Marvin and Helen Balcom; and a brother-in-law, Lynnie Balcom.

The family requests memorials be given in Don's name to the Center Creek Cemetery, 2863 170th St., Granada, MN 56039.
