BLUE EARTH - For the first time this season, the Fairmont Cardinal cross country teams claimed a pair of first-place finishes by sweeping the Blue Earth Area Invite on Tuesday at Riverside Town & Country.

The Class A, No. 6-ranked Cardinal girls team captured its seventh first-place finish in nine meets this season, while the Fairmont boys were able to take home top honors for the first time all season.

"Well, we had both our teams win today, and for the guys that was nice to get a first-place finish," said Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk.

Zac Ehlert paced the boys' winning effort with his first, first-place finish of 18 minutes, 23 seconds in the 5K race.

Kaleb Linse and Sanguja Hassan added fifth- and sixth-place finishes with times of 19:11 and 19:15 for the Cardinals.

"Kaleb Linse really came on strong for us in the second loop of the race today. And he had a great race," said Bonk.

Brian Wilde won his heat for an eight-place overall time of 20:10, while Christopher Poush raced to 10th place with a time of 20:16.

"Brian Wilde had a fantastic race today. He won his heat and moved all the way to our fourth-place time on the team," said Bonk. "That was big for us."

On the girls' side, the Cardinals grabbed eight of the top nine medals, and had 10 of the top 15 finishers to win the race.

"We had three girls under the 16-minute mark for the first time this season, and 10 girls under the 17-minute mark for the first time this season," said Bonk. "Considering the weather, that was a great race."

Jenna Pavich and Iliana Ramon topped the Cardinals' winning ways with second- and third-place times of 15:54.

"Iliana ran a personal-best time for us today, along with Megan Hawkins," said Bonk.

Fairmont's Katiana Fischer was not far behind, claiming fourth in 15:58.
