ST. JAMES - Twenty-five seconds was all that separated the top-five runners of the Fairmont girls cross country team as it claimed first-place honors at the St. James Invite on Tuesday in St. James.

Fairmont's Jenna Pavich raced to a third-place finish in 15 minutes and 20 seconds, while Katiana Fischer finished just behind her in fourth with a time of 15:20.

Iliana Ramon was the third Cardinal in a row, placing fifth overall with a time of 15:34.

"I thought that the girls ran phenominal today," said Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk. "We had a great, great pack and with only 25 seconds between all five top runners is really a great job."

Emily Haugen raced into the top 10 for the Cardinals with a seventh-place time of 15:36.

Hannah Johnson just missed the top 10, finishing 11th in 15:45, while Molly Hawkins was 14th with a time of 16:03.

"It had been over 12 years since we had competed at the St. James Country Club, and I thought it was a very nice course," said Bonk. "The girls' course was about 3,850 meters and the boys was about 4,800, so a little shorter courses, but both teams still did a good job."

Sarah Bartz completed the winning team score with a 16th-place time of 16:12.

On the boys' side, Zac Ehlert's third-place finish helped the Cardinal boys to a fourth-place team finish.

Ehlert raced in for a time of 17:09 for third overall, while Sanguja Hassan was 12th in 17:47.

"The boys ran good times today. They keep getting more competitive as the season goes along," said Bonk. "They are building for a nice finish in October."

Kaleb Linse finished in 18:13 for 18th place for Fairmont, and teammate Christopher Poush wasn't far behind in 23rd with a time of 18:23.

Cody Lane and Brian Wilde finished 29th and 31st with times of 18:35 and 18:43 for Fairmont.

Ben Huinker completed the team score with a time of 18:45 for 33rd place.

The Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther girls raced to a seventh-place team finish, led by Samantha Maul's 36th-place time of 17:26.

Hanna Geistfeld and Alissa Voyles came in 44th and 45th places with times of 18:14 and 18:15, respectively.

Maya Mar added a 51st-place time of 18:33, while Bekah Rusert finished 79th in 21:23.

Dakota DeBell and Bryn Van Zee completed their team score with finishes of 23:24 and 26:00 for 82nd and 83rd places.

Noah Frelich led the Jayhawk boys team with a 61st-place time of 20:16.

Ryan Lassas finished 72nd with a time of 21:18, while Jeremiah Colon finished in 21:35 for 74th place.

Joseph Fenske capped the Jayhawk finishers with a 90th-place time of 24:08.
