WASECA - The Waseca Bluejays fended off the vastly-improved Fairmont Cardinals, 4-3, Friday in Waseca during a South Central Conference dual girls tennis meet that was suspended due to rain on Tuesday.
The Cardinals managed to capture three of the competition's four three-set matches, while extending the Bluejays to double digit-game sets in two of the other four individual contests.
Missy Viesselman outlasted Anna Hoehn in a three-set clash, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 2 singles to produce one of Fairmont's team tallies.
Allison Moeller collected the Cardinals' other point in the singles bracket by outslugging Katie Tlusty in a three-set marathon match, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
Fairmont's third doubles combination of Briana Gratz and Andrea Carstensen also proved its stamina by outdueling Ella Seehafer and Aly Storjohann in yet another three-set battle, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.
Waseca's Olivia McIntosh and Maddie Knoll collected the other three-set slugfest by downing Sophie Shelgren and Abby Fitzgerald at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
Stephanie Butterfield and Mallorie Gehloff posted the Bluejays' other doubles decision by defeating Jill Paris and Shantel Quist at the No. 2 position in the bracket, 6-3, 6-2.
Maddie Muotka then managed to outslug Aubrey Green at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5, to generate another team tally for Waseca, while Anja Baumgarn outlasted Ellie Tonder at fourth singles, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Fairmont (12-3, 2-2 SCC) travels to St. Peter on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. conference dual meet on the Gustavus Adolphus College courts.
Waseca (5-8, 3-1) travels to Stewartville on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. non-league dual meet.
