Martins fall short in state tourney

MAPLE LAKE - The Winsted Wildcats put an end to the Fairmont Martins' hopes of reaching the Minnesota Class 'C' State Amateur Baseball tournament championship for a second straight year, winning the quarterfinal matchup 10-7 on Sunday in Maple Lake.

Winsted advanced to play Belle Plain in the semifinals on Sunday, losing to the Tigers 8-4.

The Fairmont Martins, the 2012 Class 'C' state runner-up, finished this season with a 26-7 record.

The Martins grabbed the early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the quarterfinal matchup.

Shaun McGuire smacked a double to score Jon Ellis, who walked and stole second to lead off the game.

Max Waletich and Luke Becker followed McGuire with walks, loading the bases before Adam Schmidt delivered a sacrifice fly to score McGuire for the 2-0 advantage.

The Wildcats responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to even the score.

The Martins again took the lead in the fifth inning with a five-run rally, capped off with Dustin Sobolik's two-run double.

Scott Chirpich led off the inning with a single before racing to second for a stolen base.

McGuire, who finished 2-for-5 from the plate, then recorded his second hit with a single, moving Scott Chirpich to third.

McGuire also stole second, and with Waletich's second walk of the game the bases were loaded.

Luke Becker delivered the sacrifice fly to score Scott Chirpich from third, moving McGuire and Waletich up.

Taylor Morris then reached first on an error that allowed McGuire to advance home to score to and take the 4-2 lead.

Sobolik then stepped up at the plate, blasting a double to score Waletich from third and Morris from first for the 6-2 lead.

Levi Becker, who went 2-for-4 from the plate, then drove Sobolik in from second with an RBI single, giving the Martins a 7-2 edge.

The Wildcats again responded to even the game in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs in the fifth.

Winsted then took their first lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs to make it 10-7, and never relenquished it.

Spencer Chirpich pitched 4 2/3 innings for the Martins, allowing six runs on nine hits and walking two to earn a no decision.

Matt Musser then pitched in relief for 2 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out one to take the loss.

Ian Bents pitched the final 2/3 inning for Fairmont.

Jacob Volness pitched 4 2/3 innings for the Wildcats, allowing six runs on six hits, walking five and striking out six to earn a no decision.

Evan Buhr then pitched the remainder of the game for Winsted, allowing three hits, striking out one and walking two to earn the win.

Fairmont 6, Lastrup 2 - Luke Becker's three-run home run was the exclamation point to the Martin's 6-2 win over the Lakers during the Class 'C' State Tournament on Saturday in Delano.

The Lakers took a three-run lead in the fourth inning, before the Martins managed the lead in the seventh courtesy of a three-run rally.

Adam Schmidt started it off with a two-run home run, before Taylor Morris hit a solo shot to take the one-run edge.

Luke Becker then solidified the win with his pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning, scoring Morris and Dustin Sobolik.

Shaun McGuire pitched five innings for the Martins, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out two to take a no decision.

Brandon Alfson came in to pitch in relief, going four innings and allowing two hits, while walking three and striking out two to earn the victory.

Chad Weiss pitched all nine innings for the Lakers, giving up six runs on eight hits and striking out nine to absorb the loss.

The win pitted the Martins against the Wildcats in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
