FAIRMONT - Funeral services for Merlin D. Waterbury, 83, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Bethel Evangelical Free Church in Fairmont. Interment with full military honors provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County VFW Post 1222, will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont.

Merlin passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato surrounded by his family. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Lakeview Funeral Home, Fairmont, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Merlin D. Waterbury was born Dec. 19, 1929, on a farm near Armstrong, Iowa. He was the son of Chauncey and Mary (Moore) Waterbury. Merlin graduated from Grant Consolidated School in 1947. On Sept. 2, 1950, Merlin was united in marriage to Delores Senne in Fairmont. This union was blessed with two children, Robert and Susan. The couple resided in Fairmont and shared nearly 63 years together. Merlin enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 11, 1951. He served on the U.S.S. McGinty during the Korean war until receiving his honorable discharge on June 30, 1955. After returning from his military service, Merlin worked for Fairmont Public Utilities. He worked his way up from coal handler to the superintendent of the power plant. After his retirement on June 30, 1987, Merlin continued to work as a consultant for the power plant for 10 years.

Merlin was a member of Bethel Evangelical Free Church in Fairmont as well as being a life member of the Martin County VFW Post 1222. He also held memberships with the Korean War Vets Chapter 254, Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36, the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, Conservation Club, Fairmont Hospital Auxiliary, the Gideons, and Forever 50. Merlin and Delores enjoyed traveling and had visited all 50 states.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Delores Waterbury of Fairmont; children, Robert Waterbury and his wife, Christine of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Susan Wittmus and her husband, Kenneth of Waukee, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jeremy Rahm and his wife, LaRae of Fairmont, Dustin Rahm of Fairmont, and Bethany Hartwig and her husband, Cade of Fairmont; six great-grandchildren, Noah, Nevaeh, and Annaliese Rahm, McKayla, Hailey and Carter Byers, and baby Hartwig on the way; two brothers, Richard Waterbury and his wife, Donna of Cherokee, Iowa, and Gary Waterbury and his wife, Bobbie of Sun City, Ariz.; two sisters, Karen Williamson and Marilyn Schoon, both of Des Moines, Iowa; brother-in-law, LeRoy Senne of Wabasha, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Chauncey and Mary Waterbury, Merlin was preceded in death by his sisters-in-law, Bernice Harris and Vivian Senne; brothers-in-law, Everett Harris and Roland (Bud) Senne; father-in-law, Louis Senne; mother-in-law, Frieda Senne Goerndt; step father-in-law, Albert Goerndt; and grandson-in-law, Brandon Byers.
