He was born July 21, 1939, in Fairmont, the son of Hartwig and Grace (Jeffries) Johannsen. A proud American, Fred served his country as a Marine, transmitting Morse Code communications at Camp Pendleton in California, then in Japan, Laos and the Philippines. He loved spending time in the natural beauty of his native Minnesota, and was an avid fisherman, owned and operated Fred's Bait and Tackle. He attended First Baptist Church of Lake Crystal, and served our community as a Sunday school teacher, and as the president of the Lura Lake Aeration Association. He always enjoyed taking fishing and hunting trips with family, and he loved sitting around a fire with family, neighbors and friends, listening to his brother Maurice playing the guitar. He loved gardening and working in the yard, spending lots of time playing with the grandkids, and looked forward to coffee with his buddies every morning at the station. But his favorite way to spend an afternoon was to sit quietly in the backyard swing.

Fred bravely fought the battle against cancer these last few months, enjoying the outdoors and spending time with his loved ones.

He is survived by his wife, Carole Johannsen of Amboy; his daughter, Shelly and Paul Voges of Janesville, Minn.; his daughter, Sheryl and Tom Marshall of Blaine, Minn.; his daughter, Stacy and Brian Henderlong of St. Petersburg, Fla.; his daughter, Sharon and Brad Bonnett of Mt. Lake; his brother, Clair Johannsen of Hagerstown, Md.; his brother, Maurice and Ruthann Johannsen of Truman; his sister, Twyla Geiken of Cannon Falls, Minn.; his sister, Grace and Gary Haeckel of Fairmont; his sister, Wanda Kubly of Dearborn, Mo.; his 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Brent Michael; infant sister, Mary Alice; and parents.
