FAIRMONT - The New Ulm Gold VFW baseball team used their effective bats to sweep the Fairmont Post 1222 in a pair of games on Sunday in Fairmont.
Clayton Maakestad held New Ulm scoreless through five innings from the mound, but a nine-run sixth helped New Ulm take the 10-1 win in Game 1, before they earned the 10-5 win in Game 2.
Maakestad threw six innings, allowing nine runs - four earned - on nine hits, striking out three and walking two to take the loss in the first game.
Nate Johnson pitched the final inning of relief, allowing one run on one hit and walking three.
Parker Monsen and Tyler Tennyson each had a pair of hits for Fairmont in Game 1, while Cole Emler, Ben Abel and Nathan Gillis each added singles.
Jack Waletich had a pair of hits, including a double to lead Fairmont in the second game of the doubleheader.
Tennyson and Johnson each drove in an RBI with a hit, with Abel, Monsen and Ryan Brooks each connecting on a pitch for singles.
Gillis pitched 3 2/3 innings for Fairmont, allowing seven runs - one earned - on eight hits, striking out one and walking two to absorb the loss.
Tennyson pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out one in relief.
Fairmont VFW Post 1222 (2-4) plays host to St. Clair in a 6 p.m. game today at Herb Wolf Field.
