SHERBURN - A Celebration of Life Service for Verna R. Miller, 87, of Sherburn, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Sherburn, Minn., with Rev. Steven D. Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Sherburn Cemetery in Sherburn, Minn.
Verna was called to her eternal rest on Friday morning, May 31, 2013, at her home in Sherburn, Minnesota. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Kramer Family Funeral Home in Sherburn, Minn., and one hour prior to the service at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sherburn on Tuesday. Verna Rose Westphal was born on July 9, 1925, to William and Augusta (Reiman) Westphal in Ceylon, Minn. She was received into the kingdom of God through Holy Baptism on July 26, 1925, and later reaffirmed her faith at her confirmation on June 9, 1940, both at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilbert. Verna received her education in Wilbert School. She was employed at the Fairmont Railway Motors.
On Sept. 24, 1950, Verna was united in marriage to Harland G. Miller at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairmont, Minn. After their marriage they lived in Fairmont until 1951 when they moved to Sherburn. She was employed as a telephone operator and then was employed at Teledeyne, Amdevco and later Fairmont Foods, all in Fairmont. She was busy raising her three sons. Harland died on Oct. 24, 1997. She continued living in Sherburn.
Verna was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, its LWML and Bible Study. She served on the Honor Guard and was an officer in the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary. Verna belonged to the Birthday Club and Community Chest. She help serve Meals on Wheels and enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Fox Lake Golf Club and Friendship Golf. Verna served as an officer in the Jay Garden Club and won many ribbons at the Martin County Fair for her flowers. With her church, she went to Sioux Falls and helped the homeless. Feeding the birds and watching the butterflies were very special to her.
She will be greatly missed by her three sons, David (Debra) Miller of Hudson, Wis., Thomas Miller and friend, Carlee Hunter of Sherburn, Minn., and James Miller and friend, Debbie Lynn Hoftetler of Sherburn; three grandchildren, Andrew Miller and fiance, Laura Workman of New Richmond, Wis., Cassandra (Mitch) West of West St. Paul, Minn., Jacob Miller of Mankato; sister, Alice (Raymond) Scheff of Trimont, Minn.; sister-in-law, Eileen (Henry) Westphal of Fairmont; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harland Miller; brothers, Alvin (Hazel) Westphal, Martin (Florence) Westphal and Henry Westphal; sisters, Louise (Ernest) Rosenberg, Lena (Tom) Mosloski and Meta (Frank) Mosloski and other relatives.
