To the Editor:
In the beginning, when families joined together more than 60 years ago to work for community services for their children with disabilities, a partnership developed with the Knights of Columbus organizations. Every year, a Tootsie Roll sale is held and proceeds have been given to the Arc.
In Fairmont, this dedicated group of volunteers has gone a step further. For more than 20 years, the Silent Live Auction has provided Arc with funds to continue programs and services to people with disabilities and their families. This year, the Arc Family and Friends formed and the first project was bringing back the formal Special Olympics program, especially focusing on families.
A new and successful program is "Young Athletes," coordinated by Andrea Miller. Bowling and softball continue as recreational programs, with plans for a Special Olympics softball team.
Thank you, loyal friends, for your continuing support. Together, we have come a long way.
