George Henry Howell was born March 21, 1943, in Estherville, Iowa, the son of Harry and Helen (Danielson) Howell. George lived with his family in rural Emmet County, Iowa, until 1955, when he moved with his family to a farm near East Chain. George attended East Chain School and graduated from East Chain High School. Following his graduation, George attended the University of Minnesota. He then moved home to help his dad farm and was drafted into the U.S. Army in the 1960s and served his country while stationed overseas in Germany. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, George returned home to Minnesota, where he helped his father farm and, after his father's death in 1981, he took over the farming operation. George was an active life member of the East Chain Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council and also as head usher. He was past chairman of the East Chain Township Board for 30 years, overseeing the maintenance of township roads. George also worked in elections at East Chain School and was on an REA committee to dispense charity funds. Family was extremely important to George and he took great pride in maintaining regular contact with his aunts and uncles in their older years. He enjoyed seeing his great-nieces and nephews and enjoyed nurturing and encouraging them in their ventures.

Left to cherish his memory are his four siblings, Jacquelyn Howell of Sioux Falls, S.D., Frances (Earl) Larson of Blaine, Minn., Phyllis "Sally" Howell of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Harry (Sheri) Howell of Clancy, Mont.; eight nieces and nephews, Debbie (Jim) Thomas, Jeff Larson, Susie (Jerome) Stiles, Robin (Tim) Riemenschneider, Timothy (Michele) Howell, Cody Howell, Dillon Howell, and Bridger Howell; 11 great-nieces and nephews; several cousins, as well as other extended family and friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Helen Howell; an infant brother; and two nieces.
