To the Editor:
On Wednesday night, the Fairmont Dollars for Scholars chapter awarded over 145 scholarships, totaling more than $154,000. Our chapter has now given more than $2 million in awards to students over the years.
How does this happen? Clearly, this is a community that is generous to its graduates and values higher education. Our donors all have strong Fairmont connections, even though many have moved far away. Some are businesses, some are graduates, all have strong roots in the area. And each year, Fairmont High School produces quality graduates ready to step up to their next level of education.
Wednesday night was exciting for everyone. But for the board, it's just the "tip of the iceberg." The behind-the-scenes work is demanding and time-consuming. In the end, of course, it's all worth it.
I'm proud of our donors, our students, our board members and our community. And we're already looking forward to next year.
