FAIRMONT - Andrew Johnson and J.T. Viesselman teamed up at the No. 1 doubles spot to score Fairmont's lone team point in a 6-1 nonconference tennis loss to Mound Westonka on Friday at Cardinal Courts.

The White Hawks swept the singles bracket, allowing the Cardinals to take just 10 games out of the four matches.

Luke Moorhead downed Grant Becker 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, before Arend Turner won the second singles match over Austin Becker with a matching 6-0, 6-1 score. Lucas Valota shut out Tony Joseph at third singles, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Jake Kallenbach took seven games from the White Hawks' Danny Humbert, although Humbert prevailed with a 6-4, 6-3 win to complete the singles sweep.

"They are a really good team. We knew that they would be really good coming in, and so today we really just wanted to work on staying positive throughout tough matches," said Fairmont head coach Eric Johnson. "I was really pround to look around and see very little head hanging, despite some of the hard matches we had."

Andrew Johnson and Viesselman then ended the White Hawks' chance for a shutout by downing Elliot Bussey and Jacob Moorhead 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. The teams traded games, with Johnson sending it to a tiebreaker with an overhead smash down the middle.

The Fairmont duo then took the three-point victory in the tiebreaker, sending the match into a second set.

Bussey and Moorhead took control early, but Viesselman powered a return down the sideline to keep Fairmont in the set, trailing 5-4. Johnson then fired off four strong serves to help the Cardinals clinch one of three straight games to take the set 7-5.

"I thought that J.T. and Andrew did a great job of stepping up for us and playing well against a tough team," said Eric Johnson.

Tyler Head and Sterlin Johnson almost managed a second point for Fairmont, winning the second set to send the second doubles match into a third set. After dropping the first set 6-4 to the White Hawks' Tony Levens and David Ogren, Head and Sterlin Johnson stole the momentum to take the second set 6-2.

Levens and Ogren rebounded in the third, forcing Fairmont errors and smacking shots down the line for a 6-1 third-set victory.

Connor Anderson and Adam Brandt complete the White Hawk victories with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ryan Busche and Carter Klanderud at third doubles.

"We are such a young team this year that is has taken a while, but I think that we are starting to become grittier in our matches, and that's a really good thing to see. The kids don't give up and that makes me proud as a coach," said Eric Johnson.
