WINDOM - Martin County West squeezed out a soggy victory over Fairmont during Saturday's Windom Area softball invitational before inclement weather shortened the event to only one round.
Maverick first baseman Bailey Tish's accurate throw to catcher Shawna Dressen thwarted the Cardinals' comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs, 5-4, before the teams exited the damp diamond in Windom.
Trailing 5-2, Fairmont plated two runs in its final at-bat before attempting to score the tying run on a Martin County West error. Tish, however, made the game-saving toss for the Mavericks.
Tish also went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks from an offensive standpoint, while teammate Morgan Williamson doubled home two runs on the game. Taylor Hagen contributed an RBI single to the Mavericks' winning ways.
Micaela Gochanour doubled and delivered two RBIs to top the Cardinals' effort, Tieryn Arens produced an RBI single, while Mikayla Krzywicki also chipped in a run-scoring single.
Krzywicki struck out six, issued three walks and allowed five runs on five hits in five frames of work to receive the loss.
MCW starting pitcher Rebecca Steen allowed four runs - only one earned - on six hits, struck out three and issued one base-on-balls in five innings of work to earn the victory.
Martin County West (3-2) travels to St. Clair today for a rescheduled 4:30 p.m. game.
Fairmont (0-7, 0-4 South Central) hits the road to St. James on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader.
