TRIMONT - Services for Irvin C. Benge, 91, lifelong resident of Waverly/Galena Township and Martin County, will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 30, at Waverly Lutheran Church of rural Trimont, with military honors at the church cemetery.
He died Monday, April 22, 2013, at a VA-affiliated hospital in Grantsburg, Wis.
Irvin Carol Benge was born Jan. 26, 1922, on the family farm east of Ormsby, Minn., to Alfred and Margaret (Fishburn) Benge. He was baptized and confirmed on Nov. 19, 1936, at Waverly Lutheran Church and was a lifelong member. He was a 1940 graduate of Truman High School and a World War II veteran, enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in early 1942.
Attached to the 482nd Bomb Group of the 8th Army Corps, he became a radar specialist on a B-17 Pathfinder bomber. In the war's final months, he served at ground-based radar stations in France and Germany near the front lines. After the war, he returned to the family farm to raise purebred Hereford cattle. He also sold cars, farm equipment and was a siding salesman for 30 years. On June 30, 1950, he was united in marriage to Celeste Timm at West Sveadahl Swedish Lutheran Church in Watonwan County. He is survived by his wife, Celeste; children, Linda Benge (Steve Briggs) of Grantsburg, Wis., Leanne Benge Savereide (John) of St. Paul, Minn., Lynette Benge (Mark Anderson) of River Falls, Wis., Scott Irvin (Suzanne) of Lakeville, Minn., and Laurie Benge (Brad Jones) of Bovey, Minn.; 12 grandchildren.
