ST. PETER - Mitch Pfingsten connected on a clutch 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining in regulation to pull Class 2A, No. 4-ranked Fairmont even with No. 5 St. Peter at 58-all during a clash of South Central Conference basketball titans on Thursday night in St. Peter.
The hometown Saints, however, outscored the Cardinals by a 13-10 margin in overtime to pace a 71-68 league victory to earn a share of the SCC championship with Fairmont.
St. Peter avenged its only conference loss of the season - a 64-59 defeat at Fairmont's hands on Jan. 24 at Cardinal Gym.
Pfingsten erupted for a game-high 35 points to complement six rebounds for the Cardinals, while teammate Jay Ruen delivered nine points, five rebounds and three assists.
Ryan Noll produced eight points and pocketed five steals for Fairmont, while teammate Justin Barnes chipped in seven points and seven rebounds.
The Cardinals connected on 14 of 35 shots from 2-point range, 9 of 30 behind the 3-point arc and 13 of 20 at the free throw line.
Tommy Steidler poured in a team-best 25 points to top the Saints' balanced scoring attack, while Peter Kruize and Braxton Raymond supplied 21 and 17 points, respectively, to the winning performance.
St. Peter sank 19 of 33 shots from 2-point territory, 6 of 17 behind the bonus arc and 15 of 22 at the charity stripe.
Fairmont (20-5, 9-1 SCC), the No. 1 seed in the Section 3AA, South Sub-Section tournament, plays host to No. 8-seeded St. James at 7 p.m. Saturday night at Cardinal Gym in a first-round playoff game.
St. Peter (23-3, 9-1), the No. 1 seed in the Section 2AA, North Sub-Section tournament, netted a first-round bye and awaits the winner between No. 4-seeded Belle Plaine and No. 5-seeded Tri City United at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in New Prague.

Spencer Chirpich supplied 12 points, four steals and three assists for the Cardinals (17-5), while Cole Emler chipped in 11 points.
Tyler Tennyson tallied eight points, five rebounds and three steals to help Fairmont edge St. Peter, 24-23, during C-squad action on Thursday.
Clayton Maakestad netted seven points for the Cardinals (15-5), while Noah Quiring added seven rebounds and four steals.
