FAIRMONT - The Fairmont High School Athletic Hall of Fame is scheduled to make its long-awaited comeback as part of the Cardinals' 2013 Homecoming festivities this fall.

The 20th Hall of Fame banquet will kick off with a catered dinner at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in the high school's commons before moving to the facility's Performing Arts Center for the 6:15 p.m. induction ceremonies and recognition of the prior school year's most valuable players.

Fairmont head coach Mat Mahoney and his Cardinal football team will play host to the St. James Saints in a 7 p.m. Homecoming clash on Friday, Oct. 4, at Mahoney Field.

"It's been a long time coming in getting this project back on its feet," FHS Hall of Fame chairperson and the school's activities administrator Mat Mahoney said in reference to the event's four-year hiatus. "The first step was to fill the vacancies on our selection committee, and move forward from there."

Judy Lohrenz, one of the 1990 Hall of Fame's 20 charter members and an original selection committee member, proved an important driving force behind the massive project's revival.

"Being a coaching pioneer in the rich history of Fairmont athletics, Judy understands how important it is to both our community and school district to acknowledge the achievements of our alumni - both student-athletes and coaches alike - and to preserve that information for future generations.

"She's just been a wellspring of information. Without her, the revitalization of this project would not have been possible."

Nomination forms for the Hall of Fame are available at the Fairmont High School's activities office. The deadline for nominations for this fall's induction class will be March 1.

Nominees must be Fairmont High School graduates and fall into one of the following categories to be considered for selection:

1. Earned a letter in more than one sport or at least two letters in the same sport;

2. Played on an all-conference, all-section or all-state team;

3. Earned individual honors from a conference, section, state or media outlet.

Athletes for consideration must be out of high school for a minimum of 15 years, while coaches must be retired for at least 5 years. The Hall of Fame also features a special contributors category for community coaches, volunteers, support workers, media, etc.

Fairmont Athletic Hall of Fame members Joe Burns and Brad Gerhardt (1999) and Gary Wollschlager (1994), Fairmont head cross country and track & field coach Bob Bonk, long-time Fairmont activities supporters Sue Mosloski and Dick Gould, and Sentinel sports editor Charlie Sorrells round out the nine-person selection committee.
