FAIRMONT - Funeral services for Charles F. Whitaker, 92, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel in Fairmont. Burial will take place that afternoon, at 2:30 p.m., in the Holland Cemetery near Holland, Minn.
Charles passed away Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at St. Luke's Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth. Visitation will be 4-6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and one hour prior to the services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Charles Frederick Whitaker was born June 27, 1920, in Pipestone, Minn., the son of Harold and Lena (Meyer) Whitaker. He was raised on a farm near Holland, Minn., and attended school in Holland and Ruthton, Minn. On Jan. 24, 1941, he was united in marriage to Eunice I. Johnson at St. James Lutheran Church in Holland, and Charles worked at the Holland Elevator. In 1942, they moved to Northfield, Minn., where he became the herdsman for St. Olaf College. They moved to a farm near Nerstrand, Minn., for a short time before moving to Rochester in 1949, where Charles worked at Rochester Dairy. In 1952, they moved to Truman, and the following year he moved to Northrop, Minn., and he worked at the Northfair Dairy. In 1969, they moved to Brea, Calif., where Charles was the warehouse supervisor for the Ameron Company. He retired in 1982 and Charles and Eunice moved to Mesa, Ariz., and later moved to Fairmont to be closer to family. Eunice passed away on Jan. 4, 2010.
Charles was a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mesa, St. James Lutheran Church in Northrop and a current member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fairmont. He enjoyed working with wood, shuffle board and billiards. He also called bingo for many years.
Those who will cherish his memory include five children, Delmer Whitaker and his wife, Karen, of Fairmont, Minn., Charlotte Dirksen and her husband, Lynden, of Faribault, Minn., Robert Whitaker and his wife, Rose, of New Mexico, Sandra Grefe and her husband, Mark, of Truman, Minn., Rick Whitaker and his wife, Angela, of Fayetteville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; four step grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lorraine Bodack of Portland, Ore., Eloise Nelson and her husband, Carroll, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Whalen of Rochester and Dottie Johnson of Northfield; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; wife, Eunice; one brother, Harold; three sisters-in-law and six brothers-in-law.
