Schultz, Hines place in Fargo tourney

FARGO - The Class AA No. 1-ranked Trevor Schultz finished third in the 106-pound bracket, while Class AA No. 3-ranked Colton Hines finished seventh in the 285-pound bracket to lead the Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls at the Rumble on the Red Tournament on Saturday in Fargo.

Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther's Class A No. 1-ranked Adam Cooling took home the lone championship for the area.

Schultz defeated the Class AAA No. 2-ranked Taylor Venz from Farmington in a 7-6 decision for third place in the tournament.

The senior started out with back-to-back pins for wins against Lee Schmalz from Becker in 5:59 in the opening round and then pinned Jackson County Central's Dalton Wagner in 2:36. The eventual 106-pound champion Brian Peska from Omaha Skutt was able to stop Schulz's win streak, beating him in a 6-1 decision in the quarterfinal match.

Schultz rebounded and defeated Josh Bryant from Coon Rapids in a 16-1 technical fall before winning the consolation semifinal match by forfeit.

Hines meanwhile, in the 285 bracket, earned byes in the first two rounds before beating New Prague's Zach Lafavor in a 13-4 major decision in the third round.

Eagan's Class AAA No. 4-ranked Colin Fisher then handed Hines his first loss of the tournament in a 3-1 decision in the quarterfinal match.

Hines outlasted Valley City's Steven Horner for a 7-5 consolation match victory before Bryan Bjerk from Grand Forks Red River handed him a 3-1 loss in the consolation quarterfinal match.

Hines went on to beat Thief River Falls' Chris Kucera in a 10-9 decision to claim seventh place.

The top-ranked Cooling pinned for three of his six opponents for victories and finished by defeating the Class A No. 2-ranked Mitch Lange from Royalton-Upsala in a 3-1 decision for the championship.

Cooling opened up the tournament with a pin for the win over New London-Spicer's Jarrett Hatlestad in 1:37, before pinning Evan Wendt from Frazee in 2:33.

In the third round, Cooling outlasted the Class A No. 7-ranked at 145-pounds Keegan Moore from JCC in a 9-6 decision.

From there, Cooling pinned West Fargo's Shelby Schulz in 4:56 in the quarterfinal match and then earned a 17-6 major decision victory over Benilde-St. Margarets's Jake Deutschlander in the semifinals.

Jayhawks teammate and Class A No. 10-ranked Bryon Forstner won his first-round match in the 126 bracket with a pin over Zeph Inon from Spearfish in 1:26. Forstner lost his second round match to Blake Bosch from South Border in a 10-0 major decision, but came back strong in the consolation bracket.

Forstner defeated the Class A No. 10-ranked Austin Skillings from Frazee in a 5-3 decision, before downing the Class A No. 9-ranked Cameron Henning from JCC in a 15-4 major decision.

The senior would earn a 6-3 victory over Thief River Falls' Noah Bernier before Jace Berg from Lisbon delt him a 9-7 loss in the consolation bracket.

Elijah Gronewold lost his opening match against Ryan Schuman from Tri-Valley in the 126 bracket but responded with a 15-4 major decision victory over Andover's Matt Mclaughlin in the second round of the consolation.

Gronewold then pinned Isaac Loosbrock from Chaska-Chanhassen in 4:17 before losing the Class AA No, 10-ranked Tony Lynn from Adrian in his fourth consolation match.

F/MCW's Chris Ettsvold earned a first-round bye in the 113 bracket, but then was pinned by Class AAA No. 8-ranked Jacob Gabbard from Farmington in the second round. Anoka's Cole Eischens pinned Ettsvold in 1:29 in his first consolation match.

Harley Luhmann earned byes in the first two rounds of the 138 bracket for the Red Bulls but was pinned in his first match by Class AAA No. 3-ranked Weston Drogemueller from Wayzata in 3:10.

Luhmann then received byes in the first two rounds of the consolation before Ryan Swenson from Osseo pinned him in 2:35.

F/MCW's Tanner Lange took a forfeit victory in the first round of the 145 bracket before Derek Eldeen from Tri-Valley defeated him with a 4-1 decision in the second round.

In the consolation bracket, Anoka's Kodi Krone defeated Lange in a 10-1 major decision.

Red Bulls' Joe Weber earned byes in the first two rounds of the 152 bracket and defeated Cleveland's A.J. Lermuseaux in the third round in a 9-2 decision.

Zach Schuman from Tri-Valley pinned Weber with 45 seconds remaining in the match in the fourth round of the tournament.

Weber bounced back to win a 7-3 decision over Fargo North's Caleb Worral. West Fargo's Kyle Kragnes downed Weber in the next match, winning a 9-3 decision.

Brock Burmeister was JCC's Moore's first victim, losing by a 20-3 technical fall in the opening round.

Burmeister then earned a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket for the Red Bulls, before Albert Lea's Bany Chan defeated him in a 15-0 technical fall in the next round.

Nathan Gillis took byes in the first two rounds of the 170 bracket, but was pinned by Anoka's Matt Njos in the third round in 3:22.

Gillis then pinned New London-Spicer's Jordan Baker for the win in 1:52. Nathan Bueltel from Minneota pinned Gillis in the second round consolation match in 2:02.

F/MCW's Luis Figueroa lost to Bobby Lee from Becker in a 9-2 decision in the 182 bracket, before Royce Myren from Anoka defeated him in a 12-3 major decision in a consolation match.

Isaac Florell from Totino Grace defeated the Jayhawks' Jake Denn in an 8-0 major decision in the second round of the 182 bracket.

Denn then pinned Fargo Davies' Abdi Mohammed in 1:33 before JCC's Tanner Menke won in a 4-0 decision.

F/MCW's Kory Brown lost a tough first-round match to Class AA No. 1-ranked Lance Benick at 182-pounds from Totino Grace in the 195 bracket. Benick pinned Brown in 1:08.

Grand Forks Red River's Jared Bertsch pinned Brown in 1:54 in the consolation bracket.

The Red Bulls' Tyler Allen received byes in the first two rounds, but was pinned by Cambridge-Isanti's Kyle Chromy in the third round of the 220 bracket in 39 seconds.

Coon Rapids' Shad Olson then pinned Allen in 43 seconds in the consolation bracket.

The Jayhawks' Issac Pfeffer lost to Woodbury's Matt Delaney in the first round of the 132 bracket, getting pinned in 1:18.

Cole Pietsch lost his opening round match of the 106 bracket to Class AA No. 10-ranked Skylar Hieronimus from Adrian, getting pinned in 25 seconds.

Tri-Valley's Dylan Eldeen then pinned Pietsch in the consolation bracket in 2:47.

Fairmont/Martin County West plays host to Blue Earth Area in a South Central Conference dual meet at 7 p.m. in Fairmont.

Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther plays host to River Valley in a 7 p.m. dual meet on Thursday in Madelia.
