Lemon, Wilson power Cards’ win in Cup tilt

BLAINE - Fairmont Area freshmen forwards Brooke Lemon and Jalyssa Wilson powered the Cardinals' girls hockey team to a 5-3 consolation semifinal victory over the Marshall Tigers during Schwan Cup Tournament action on Friday.

Fairmont Area (4-7) advances to face Watertown, S.D. - a 6-3 winner over Worthington - in the Green Division's consolation championship game at 1:45 p.m. today at Super Rink 2 in Blaine.

Trailing 2-0 after one period, Lemon and Wilson combined forces to even the score heading into the third segment.

Lemon netted the first goal of her hat trick by converting a double-assist from Wilson and eighth-grader Myah Lytle into Fairmont Area's first goal at the 8:26 juncture of the second period.

Wilson then distributed the second of her game-best four assists, in conjunction with freshman Tieryn Arens, to Lemon for the equalizing goal at the 15:39 mark of the middle frame.

Lemon then scored her third goal off another double assist from Wilson and Arens to stake the Cardinals to a 3-2 lead only 2:52 into the third period.

Arens generated Fairmont Area's next goal off a pass from Wilson to double the lead at the 4:58 mark.

Mckenna Radke inched Marshall within one by converting assists from Megan Vogl and Miranda Fischer into a goal only 32 seconds later.

Eighth-grader Taylor Nuss, however, closed out the Cardinals' scoring by netting an unassisted goal with only two seconds left in regulation.

Lizzie Archbold scored off a pass from Hanna Peterson only 4:25 into the opening period for Marshall before Peterson tallied a power-play goal off Jessica Blanchard's assist with just 20 seconds remaining in the first frame for an early 2-0 lead.

Fairmont Area eighth-grade goaltender Sadie Sandersfeld turned away 12 of the Tigers' 15 shots on goal to earn the victory.

Marshall netminder Sierra Wagner stopped 32 of the Cardinals' 37 shots on goal.

Boys Hockey

Fairmont Area 3, Mankato East/Loyola 3 (tie) - The Cardinals and Cougars skated to a 3-3 tie in the seventh-place game at the River Lakes Tournament in Paynesville on Friday.

Brock Johnson lit the lamp twice for the Cardinals, with teammate Rodney Engstrom contributing one goal and one assist to the tie.

Mankato East/Loyola's Shane Sellner scored the first of his two goals in the game at 7:17 in the opening frame on a Brandon Adams assist to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

Engstrom responded with an unassisted goal less than three minutes later to tie the game, before Brock Johnson gave the Cardinals' their first lead of the tournament at the 11:10 mark on a Grant Becker assist.

With 54 seconds left in the first period, Sellner struck again, this time to even the game at 2-2. Brandon Adams and Brent Adams combined for the double-assist on the goal.

Brock Johnson took back the lead for the Cardinals 2:46 into the second period. Engstrom and Becker combined for an assist on Johnson's go-ahead goal to make it 3-2.

Unfortunately for Fairmont Area, Brad Johnson found the back of the net on a Grayson Gavin pass to knot the game for the third time at the 6:36 juncture of the second period.

Colton Cunning managed to fend off 12 third-period shots from the Cougars to send the game into overtime. Cunning made 38 saves on 41 Cougar shots on goal in the game.

Jeremia Merela made 23 saves on 26 Cardinal shots on net.

Neither team scored during the overtime.

Fairmont Area (1-7-1, 1-1 South Central Conference) travels for a 7 p.m. nonconference game against Becker in Le Sueur on Thursday.

Mankato East/Loyola (4-8-1) travels to St. Paul Highland Park for an 8 p.m. nonconference game on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
