Cardinals trample Trojans

WORTHINGTON - The Fairmont Area Cardinals girls hockey team exploded on offense to pound out a 17-3 nonconference victory over the Worthington Trojans on Tuesday night in Worthington.

Jalyssa Wilson netted three goals in the first period and assisted on four others in the game to pace the Cardinals offensive efforts.

Wilson's opening goal was unassisted, with Abby Rahm earning the assist on Wilson's second goal to make it 2-0. Wilson's natural hat trick came off an assist from Myah Lytle at the 8:33 juncture to make it 4-0.

Katie Hohensee squeezed in a Fairmont Area goal at the nine-minute mark to interrupt Wilson's consecutive string of goals. Hohensee's goal came off a double-assist from Erin Rahm and Jordyn Junkermeier.

Twenty eight seconds after her assist on Wilson's third goal, Lytle claimed her own netter, sending a Wilson-Tieryn Arens double assist through the crease to make it 5-0.

Jenna Klages netted the final Cardinal goal of the opening period with an assist to Abby Rahm with just under five minutes left in the frame.

Worthington's Betsy Thompson single-handidly kept the Trojans on the board, her first goal occurring with 18 seconds left in the first. Thompson would net all three of the Trojans' goals for a hat trick on the night.

In the second period, the Cardinals added eight more tallies to built an insurmountable lead.

Brooke Lemon scored a pair of goals for Fairmont Area, while teammates Brooklyn Healey, Kelsy Junkermeier, Jordyn Junkermeier, Abby Rahm and Taylor Nuss also scored goals on the night.

Hohensee tallied her second goal of the game during the middle frame, giving Fairmont Area a 14-2 lead after two periods.

Thompson delivered Worthington's second goal of the game during the second period.

Jordyn Junkermeier slid her secondgoal of the game across the crease in the third period, along with goals from Cardinal teammates Logyn Cone and Lauren Carlson to extend the visitors' lead to 17-2.

Thompson scored her third goal of the game with 3:02 remaining to make the final 17-3.

Worthington netminder Bailey Kruse made 26 saves on 43 Fairmont Area shots on net, while Cardinal goalkeeper Miranda O'Connor made three saves on five Worthington shots in the first two periods.

Sadie Sanderfeld made three saves on four shots in the third for the Cardinals.

Fairmont Area (2-6, 0-3 South Central Conference) hosts Windom Area in a 7 p.m. nonconference game at Martin County Arena on Thursday.
