FAIRMONT - Funeral services for Elvin C. Cordes, 87, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Burial will be in the Basey Cemetery near Winnebago, Minn., with full military honors. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Elvin passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 9, 2012, at Lutz Wing Nursing Home in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Elvin Carl Cordes was born Sept. 15, 1925, in Odin, Minn., the son of George and Louise Cordes. He attended school in Amboy where he graduated from high school before entering the U.S. Navy on Nov. 17, 1944. He served in the Navy as a radarman during World Ward II until his honorable discharge on June 26, 1946. On Feb. 22, 1947, he was united in marriage to Lois LaVonne Hemmingway. Together the couple made their home in Fairmont, where they were blessed with two children, David and Marge. Elvin worked for Melody Oil for a few years before owning and operating Na-Churs Fertilizer Company in Fairmont for many years. Elvin sold the business and retired in the 1980s. Elvin and Lois loved square dancing, playing cards and spending time with family. Elvin also loved to hunt and fish in his younger years. Elvin was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36.
Elvin is survived by two children, David Cordes of Fairmont, Margie Buysse of Mankato; four grandchildren, Jessica Zanke and her husband, Darin, of New Ulm, Amber Cordes of Fairmont, Andy Buysse of Madison Lake, Brent Buysse of Mankato; four great-grandchildren, Dylan, Tori, Lucas and Austin; sister, Norma Cole and her husband, Don, of Brownton, Minn.; brother, Bob Cordes and his wife, Ruth, of Grove City, Minn.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty Cordes of Bemidji, Minn., Doris Armstrong of Cannon Falls, Minn., Harlan and Trudy Hemmingway of Spicer, Minn., Vince Maine of Amboy, Minn.; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Lois, Elvin was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kelli Cordes; daughter-in-law, Jackie Cordes; sister, Dorothy Maine; two brothers, Howard and August Cordes.
