Fairmont nips Marshall by 3

MARSHALL - Fairmont junior guard Mitch Pfingsten connected on a pair of free throws with 7.6 seconds remaining in regulation to seal the Class AA, No. 5-ranked Cardinals' 66-63 victory over the Marshall Tigers during nonconference basketball action on Saturday in Marshall.

Pfingsten produced a game-leading 25 points to pace the Cardinals' winning ways, while also contributing four rebounds.

Junior forward Jay Ruen generated 16 points to complement four boards and two steals for Fairmont, while teammate Josh Eversman delivered nine points - including a two-handed slam dunk. Eversman also pocketed a pair of steals.

Levi Becker added five points and six rebounds to the red-and-white's winning performance.

Derek Buysse netted 16 points to top Marshall's balanced offensive effort, while teammates Aaron Mathiowetz and Riley Sharbono scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Fairmont (2-1) travels to Wells on Tuesday night to face United South Central in another non-league game.

Marshall (0-1) plays host to Southwest Conference opponent Redwood Valley on Tuesday night.

Marshall posted a 44-31 victory over Fairmont during B-squad action on Saturday in Marshall.

Parker Monsen scored seven points to top the Cardinals, while Derek Hunwardsen supplied five points and three steals.

Ben Abel added four points and five boards for Fairmont (2-1).

Girls Basketball

Blue Earth Area 48, Southwest Star 42 - Senior power forward Krista Hassing recorded a double-double performance to power the Bucs to a 48-42 nonconference triumph over the Quasars on Saturday in Okabena.

Hassing netted 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to complement three assists, while teammate Whitney Pirsig contributed 15 points - including 7 of 8 free throws - and six rebounds to Blue Earth Area's winning effort.

Ciarra Olson scored six points and grabbed six boards for the Bucs, while Janessa Jahnke chipped in eight rebounds and four points.

Blue Earth Area (4-0, 1-0 South Central) travels to Waseca on Friday night for a conference contest.

Sophie Shelgren collected 13 points, six rebounds and five steals to help engineer Fairmont's 47-24 triumph over North Union during B-squad action Saturday in Armstrong.

Courtney Mosloski produced 13 points and pocketed six steals for the Cardinals, while teammate Sydney Glienke scored eight points.

Fairmont travels to Windom Area on Tuesday night.

North Union edged Fairmont, 29-24, during C-squad action Saturday in Armstrong.

Marisa Nelson tallied 14 points and eight rebounds to top the Cardinals, Emily Kloeckner netted six rebounds and three steals, while Abby Fitzgerald chipped in six boards.

Fairmont hits the road to Windom Area on Tuesday night.
