‘Dala’ coming to Opera House

December 5, 2012
Meg Alexander - Staff Writer , Fairmont Sentinel

FAIRMONT - Dala is the combined efforts of two best friends, musicians who met in high school music class 10 years ago and have continued playing together.

On Friday, the award-winning Canadian duo will perform at Fairmont Opera House.

"We play guitar, piano, ukulele, a little bit of glockenspiel, but the essence of what we do is the harmony with our two voices," said Sheila Carabine.

DALA?— Amanda Walther, left, and Sheila Carabine of Dala will perform Friday at Fairmont Opera House.

Their influences are fairly easy to detect for anyone familiar with the 1960s folk scene and the sounds of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and The Beatles.

"The album 'Blue' (by Joni Mitchell) is one of the first albums I listened to or claimed as my own," Carabine said. "My brother ... gave me the cassette on my 13th birthday. That was the first time I was personally moved by music and I was never the same."

The majority of their songs are original, though they do perform a few covers from time to time, and some Christmas songs will be included for the Opera House show.

Speaking as a song-writer, Carabine finds inspiration from various sources: "relationships with friends, family, myself in the broader context of the world and Canada. You can't predict what's going to inspire you, but it usually stops you dead in your tracks and then you have to write it."

Between songs, Carabine and Walther like to share the stories behind their music as well as anecdotes from their adventures together.

"The thing that got us started was the connection of our voices and that's what it comes down to: our connection as performers and our connection as friends and that's what we want the audience to take away from the show," Carabine said.

Tickets to see Dala are $20 for adults, $10 for students, and available for purchase by calling the Opera House at (507) 238-4900 or visiting www.fairmontoperahouse.com

The show starts at 7:30, with doors and the bar opening at 6:30 p.m.
