Hines wins class, Red Bulls take 6th

BLUE EARTH - The Class 2A No. 4-ranked Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls' senior wrestler Colton Hines started off the 2012-13 season with his first championship and helped his team to a sixth-place finish, winning the 285-pound bracket at the Dick Maher Invite on Saturday in Blue Earth.

Brainerd took the team title, finishing in first with a score of 186 over the Class 1A No. 1-ranked Jackson County Central, which finished second with 161.5.

Hines downed Mankato East's Lincoln Benzkofer in a 5-2 decision for the first-place finish in the tournament. The senior pinned Worthington's Peter Abraham in the second round after receiving a first-round bye, before beating Brainerd's James Weiss in the semifinal 4-1.

Ranked No. 1 at 106 in Class 2A, Trevor Schultz finished second for the Red Bulls in the 113 bracket to the No. 1-ranked 113 wrestler in Class 2A, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf Pemberton's Skyler Petry by a 9-2 decision.

After garnering a first-round bye, Schultz defeated the Huskies' Ryker VanderWoude by a technical foul in the second period of the second round. Schultz then pinned Maple River's Derek Moore in the semifinal to reach the championship.

Freshman Luis Figueroa started his season with a bang, finishing second to Brainerd junior Sam Adams at 220. Figueroa opened the tournament with a first-round bye, before sneaking past WEM/JWP's Taylor Grams in the quarterfinal 4-3.

With a spot to the championship on the line, Figueroa pounded Mankato East junior Ben Winans for a 13-5 major decision victory.

Adams pinned Figueroa in the championship to take home the first-place finish.

Red Bulls junior Joe Weber shut out Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther senior Jon Whitney 5-0 in the 152 third-place bout to come away with a third-place title.

Weber, who received a bye the first round, pinned WEM/JWP wrestler Brendan Dimmel in the first period of the quarterfinal match. Brainerd's Luke Boran escaped the semifinal match with Weber for a 5-4 victory to reach the championship, sending Weber to the consolation bracket.

In the first consolation match, Weber pinned Maple River's Kyle Schoneck at 2:57 to reach the third-place match.

Kory Brown garnered byes in the first two rounds of the 195 tournament, before finishing with an 8-6 victory over Blackhawk Jake Denn for a third-place finish.

Worthington's Carson Hagen defeated Brown 7-3 in his opening match, before Brown pinned Mankato East's Kalob Hays at 1:56 to reach the third-place match.

Blackhawks' senior Adam Cooling, the Class 1A No. 1-ranked wrestler at 160 garnered his first championship in the 160-pound bracket with a 7-2 decision over the Class 2A No. 2-ranked WEM/JWP senior Brady Ayers (170).

Cooling, after having a bye the first round, defeated Lake Mills' Jon Erickson in the second round by a 14-3 major decision. The senior then handed the Class 1A No. 10-ranked Mitch Stoltzman from Maple River (152) a 21-6 technical fall in the semifinal.

The Blackhawks finished ninth overall as a team with a score of 83.5, while Blue Earth Area finished 11th with 42. The Bucs were without Class 1A No. 8-ranked Carter Hanson (170), No. 7-ranked Kysten Zierke (195), No. 10-ranked Martin Granados (285), Gus Phillips and David Franta, who were on a mandatory break after winning the Class AAA football state championship.

The Class 1A No. 5-ranked USC junior Dominic Alger won the 106-pound championship, defeating Brainerd's Bryton Mutz 9-6 in the final.

Worthington's Anthony Luft (113), the Class 2A No. 4-ranked wrestler, defeated Maple River's Zack Kuhns (113), who is ranked No. 3 in Class 1A in a 4-1 decision to take the 120 title on Saturday.

Jordan Biehn defeated WEM/JWP's Colin Ayers 17-5 in a major decision for the Huskies at 126.

For the Huskies, Cameron Henning upset the Class 1A No. 6-ranked Blackhawk Bryon Forstner 12-5 for the 132 crown.

The Huskies' Class 1A No. 2-ranked Eliot Jurries (126) defeated the Class 1A No. 1-ranked 132-pound Rebel Dylan Herman 9-3 for the 138 title.

Maple River's Class 1A No. 7-ranked, Aaron Trio (145), pinned the Rebels' Class 1A No. 6-ranked, Derek Herman (138) for the 145 title.

Lake Mills' Noah Irons finished first at 152, defeating Brainerd's Luke Boran 7-0 in the final.

Worthington's Zach Kampama won the 170 title, defeating Brainerd's Jace Engelmann 6-4 in overtime.

The Rebels' Class 1A No. 5-ranked Colton Carlson pinned Class 3A No. 2-ranked Levi Rubin from Brainerd for the 182 first-place finish. Lake Mills' Ben Irons finished third at 182, beating Maple River's Tyler Olson 4-0.

Maple River's Casey Decker defeated Worthington's Carson Hagen 4-3 for the 195 first-place finish.

The Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls will play host to a triangular meet with New Ulm and Waseca at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Sherburn.
