Library will cut back on hours

November 19, 2012
Fairmont Sentinel

To the Editor:

Over the past few years, our Fairmont Library staff has noticed a definite drop in library use on Saturdays.

During the fall and winter, the Fairmont Library has been open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Although use in the middle of the day is still strong, use drops off decidedly in the late afternoon.

Since we are always looking for ways to economize and make the most efficient use of our tax dollars, the Library Board recently voted to reduce Saturday hours at the Fairmont Library. Beginning in January 2013, the Fairmont Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays year round.

This small reduction in hours will save the library a substantial amount of money. These funds can be used toward new materials and programs, two areas that are always growing and in need of funding.

As many of you know, the past few years have been difficult for all state and local budgets. Many Minnesota libraries, in fact, have faced budget cuts resulting in hourly reductions. Some of these have been quite severe.

We hope our customers will see wisdom in this reduction, which we do not believe will adversely affect service.

We thank you for your continued patronage. If you would like to provide feedback, please contact Library director Jenny Trushenski at jjepse@tds.lib.mn.us or (507)?238-4207.

Jenny Trushenski, director

Martin County Library
