FAIRMONT - Fairmont Area School Board on Tuesday approved reinstating funding for co-curricular activities and several teaching positions for next school year.
Funding is restored for football, cheerleading, tennis, volleyball, cross country, basketball, gymnastics, wrestling, golf, softball, baseball, track, speech, robotics, Knowledge Bowl, math league, yearbook, fall and spring play, musical, student council, band concerts, choir concerts, orchestra concerts and science fairs.
In addition, the school will continue to fund an activities director and activities director's assistant; elementary school art, music and physical education; fifth- and sixth-grade band; fifth- and sixth-grade orchestra; vocational electives teachers; and physical education electives teachers.
The approximately $750,000 in cuts had been made in advance of last week's election, when voters were asked to support an operating referendum increasing per student funding from $500 to $950.
If the levy had not passed, the programs and teachers would have remained unfunded for 2013-2014, and the school day would have been shortened by one hour.
Voters approved the measure by a 2-1 margin, however, so the board took action to restore the budget items.
"The voter turnout was fabulous," board member Diane Gerhardt said Tuesday. "It was nice to see the support."
