James L. Selbrade

FAIRMONT - James "Jim" L. Selbrade, 70, of Fairmont, Minn., passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at the Mayo Clinic Heath System-Fairmont.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Lakeview Funeral Home with military honors following by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County VFW Post 1222.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Lakeview Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to the service Friday. Burial will be at a later date.

James Loran Selbrade was born Dec. 8, 1941, in Fairmont, Minn., the son of Roy H. and Marjorie (Prelipp) Selbrade. He attended school in Fairmont and then entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 5, 1959, and was stationed in New Mexico and then served in Germany. He was discharged from the Army in 1962, but remained in the Army Reserves for three more years. Jim married Nona Harris and they had three children together, Mark, Alan and Ivy. They lived in Loveland, Colo., then moved to Morgan, Minn., and then settled back to Martin County. While in Fairmont, James worked for Dan Harris Painting then started S & S Painting and was partners with Duane Senne. On April 11, 1992, he married Mary Mammenga and they lived in Fairmont.

Jim was a board member of the Lakesters Car Club and the Lost Chord Club in the St. Paul area and was also involved in Bo's Show and Shine. He was also a member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36, Martin Co. VFW Post 1222 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. In his spare time, Jim loved auto racing and participated in demolition derbys. He participated in car shows, watched sports, and loved to play cards every night from 5-6 p.m. He would then shower and lay in bed watching TV until almost midnight.

Those who will cherish his memory include his wife, Mary Selbrade of Fairmont, Minn.; three children, Mark Selbrade (Michelle) of Medford, Minn., Alan Selbrade and Ivy Selbrade, both of Fairfax, Iowa; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren; six step children, Steven Mammenga of Truman, Minn., Doug Mammenga (Darla) of Truman, Minn., Reena Alons (Loren) of Hospers, Iowa, Karen Kneeland (Thomas) of Truman, Minn., Craig Mammenga (Kathy) of Valrico, Fla., Diane Korte (James) of Welcome, Minn.; 10 step grandchildren; 16 step great grandchildren; eight brothers and sisters, Louise Schaal of Waseca, Minn., Roger Selbrade (Shirley) of Fairmont, Minn., Phyllis Nordine (Steve) of Hinkley, Minn., Gene Selbrade, Jeff Selbrade (Sue), Stan Selbrade, all of Fairmont, Minn., Christopher Selbrade of Hawaii, Janice Mueller (Greg) of Waseca; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Roy and Marjorie Selbrade, Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, Clinton and Randy Selbrade; nephew, Chris McCoy; step grandson, Caspar Kneeland; and great nephew, Adam Tietema.
