To the Editor:
The quality of a community is determined by the quality of its schools.
When schools continually cut activities and programs because of lack of funds, the communities as a whole suffer.
When parents wish their children to participate in activities which create well rounded citizens (music, art, sports, etc) and the schools cannot provide them , parents will pay for those expenses out of their own pockets. The money which they could once give to their church, to the Salvation Army, Red Rock, the Opera House, Martin County Historical Society, and many other non profits will disappear. Again, it's the entire community that suffers.
When persons considering employment look at communities one of the first things they look at are the schools. When the schools are less than top notch, they go somewhere else.
Losing sports, art and music will also lead to students enrolling in other schools. In Minnesota this is already occurring and will only increase if we, the citizens of this community, decide against this referendum.
I urge you to vote YES on the school referendum. Let's not lower our property values, our community values, our quality of life.
