Cuts not a bluff

October 24, 2012
Fairmont Sentinel

To the Editor:

It is vitally important that people in Fairmont and surrounding communities understand that the cuts for Fairmont are not "proposed" or are not a "bluff". The school board has already voted. It is a done deal and if the referendum does not pass, all the programs listed:

(All sports, Speech, Robotics, Yearbook, Knowledge Bowl, Math League, Fall Muscial, Science Fair, Student Council, Band, Choir & Orchestra and 8.5 Teachers) will be cut, gone, done. The task of finding funding to reinstate some or all of these opportunities would be daunting. In reference to a recent letter to the editor stating "It's inside the school that counts"; what is less discussed is that the school day will also be cut, ending at 2:22 p.m. Our schools will be maintaining minimums of education time to teach our students. Specialized classes, such as art and music, will be rolled into general class time. Both teachers and parents agree this is not what is best for our children. This referendum is not about "what the school looks like on the outside, and all the activities outside". Please read the activities to be cut above again - I would guess approximately 90 percent of those activities are housed "inside" the school buidings.

Thank you and please vote yes for our children's future and yours, for they are truly one in the same.
