Fairmont girls tennis lineup edges Luverne, 4-3

LUVERNE - Fairmont's second doubles team of Jill Paris and Marina Rufli won a three-set match to pace the visiting Cardinals' 4-3 victory over the Luverne Cardinals during nonconference tennis action Thursday in Luverne.

Holding a 3-2 lead in the team competition, Paris and Rufli captured the dual meet-winning point by downing Danielle Kneip and Brianna Erickson in the third set, 6-2.

Paris and Rufli claimed the opening set, 6-1, before Kneip and Erickson rallied for a 6-4 second-set decision to force a third frame.

Camilla Hermanrud, Allison Moeller and Missy Viesselman each earned straight-set singles victories to help spearhead Fairmont's team triumph.

Hermanrud downed Emily Robinson at No. 2 singles in back-to-back 6-2 sets, while Moeller coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Katie Eeten at third singles. Viesselman outslugged Emilee Johnson at fourth singles, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.

Kaitlin Wohnoutka generated Luverne's only singles point by defeating Aubrey Green, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.

Luverne's third doubles tandem of McKenzi Wenninger and Tatiana Gust outlasted Briana Gratz and Andrea Carstensen in a three-set slugfest, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7).

Paige Adams and Kynzie Smedsrud capped the hometown Cardinals' team points by defeating Fairmont's Abby Fitzgerald and Sophie Shelgren at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-1.

Fairmont (9-5) competes in the SCC Meet at 9 a.m. Saturday in Waseca.

River Valley 4, Blue Earth Area 3 - The Wildcats scratched out a 4-3 non-league victory over the Bucs on Thursday at Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth.

Kaitlyn Olsen, the No. 1 seed at No. 4 singles in the South Central Conference Meet on Saturday in Waseca, prevented River Valley's sweep of the singles bracket. The Bucs' Olsen downed Natalie Stevens at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Aeli Olson and Paige Darrington teamed at second doubles to post a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Wildcats' Marlayna Evers and Erika Ries, while BEA teammates Beka Krussow and Kali Viland combined for a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Katelyn Johnson and Taylor Hoffman at third doubles.

Emily Johnson and Kalyn Haas collected River Valley's lone doubles point at the No. 1 spot, defeating Karli Olsen and Natali Fellows, 6-3, 6-3.

Kallie Smith downed Karleigh Wolff in a three-setter at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Wildcat teammate Becky Roiger posted a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Lindsey Prokop at No. 2 singles. Lauren Laffen outlasted the Bucs' Annika Wilhelmi at third singles, 6-2, 7-5.

Blue Earth Area (10-5) competes in the SCC Meet at 9 a.m. Saturday in Waseca.
