Mary Jane Wolford was born to John and Anna (Raforth) Wolford in Welcome, Minn. She attended and later was a 1941 graduate of Welcome High School. Mary then attended and later graduated with an experimental psychology major and split minor in philosophy and political science from the University of Minnesota in 1944. She worked for Joseph E. Seagrams in Baltimore and Lawrenceburg, Ind., where she met and married Clarence Tull of Hanover, Ind. Seagram's policy after the war was not to employ married women so she worked at the Lawrenceburg Press and later became a teacher because pregnant women were not allowed to teach. During this time, she earned a Master of Education Administration certificate and a doctor's degree in education from the University of Cincinnati. Mary taught at the University of Miami in Ohio before moving to New York City with her husband where he became a traffic manager before his death in 1973. Mary was employed by Connecticut State University and they were living in Stamford, Conn. After Clarence's death, she moved to New Haven. In 1984, she retired from Emeritus and moved to Minnesota to live with her sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson of Lewisville. Mary enjoyed reading books and belonged to a book club in St. James. She was an avid reader and loved wildlife and cats.
She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson of St. James, Minn.; and her children, Brenda Schmillen of St. James, Minn., David J. Johnson of Mankato, Minn., Faye Johnson of Olivia and Diane Bonert of rural St. James, Minn. Sandra Morris of California is a survivor from Mary's brother.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Wolford; husband, Clarence Tull; brother and sister-in-law, Lovell and Irene Wolford; and other relatives.
Mary's family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Watonwan County Humane Society, P.O. Box 346, St. James, MN 56081.
