EDGERTON - Carter Welchlin distributed two assists, Grant Becker produced one goal and one assist, while Matt Tennyson recorded a shutout to power the Fairmont Area Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the Southwest Minnesota Christian Eagles during soccer action Saturday in Edgerton.
"Carter's been doing a nice job of getting the ball where it needs to be for us," said Fairmont Area head coach Jeff Kot, who netted his 75th prep victory via the nonconference shutout. "He made a cross volley to the middle of the field and right to Lucas' foot and [Miles] did the rest."
Miles did exactly that, knocking the ball into the left side of the net off of Welchlin's first assist of the game to stake the Cardinals to a 1-0 lead at the 34:10 juncture of the opening half.
Oscar Svenfelt then doubled the visiting lineup's margin at the 28:54 mark. Stopper Brandon Jensen triggered the scoring chance by booting a long pass to a breaking Becker. Becker then found Svenfelt along the right wing and he pushed it past the Eagle netminder for a goal.
Welchlin then delivered another perfect pass to Becker on a breakaway chance; Becker hammered home his shot to cap the scoring, with 33:06 remaining in the second half.
Tennyson made five saves to record the shutout for the Cardinals, who generated 11 shots on goal.
