FAIRMONT - The Fairmont Area boys soccer team defended its title in the Albert Lea Invitational tournament, beating Marshall 2-1 in Game 1 before defeating Albert Lea 2-1 in the championship game in Albert Lea on Saturday.
Fairmont Area struck first in the championship when Oscar Svenfelt scored on a rebound from a Carter Welchlin shot.
Grant Becker worked the ball down the field and into the corner to Welchlin, who then beat a defender and took a shot in front of the goal.
The shot was blocked by the Tigers' keeper and Svenfelt sent it in for the score at 28:29 in the first half to make it 1-0.
At 10:21 in the second half Albert Lea's Timothy Furland sent a penalty kick past the Cardinal net-minder Matt Tennyson to tie up the game at 1-1.
Less than 40 seconds later, Fairmont Area had taken the lead back with another Svenfelt goal.
Once again Welchlin took a shot on the Tigers' goal, and Svenfelt was there for the rebound, sliding in to score the game-winning goal to make it 2-1.
Tennyson made eight saves in the win, while the Cardinals fired 18 shots on goal.
In Game 1, Fairmont Area was down 1-0 but came back to score two goals and take the 2-1 victory over Marshall on Saturday.
Marshall's Trevor Johnson scored the first goal of the game at 33:40 to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals' Evan Ward tied things up at 31:49 with a 22-yard shot that sailed past the Marshall goalie to make it 1-1.
Lucas Miles sent a pass to Becker, who shot it into the goal at 28:07 in the second half to give the Cardinals the lead.
Tennyson made nine saves in the win, while the Cardinals fired 13 shots on goal.
Fairmont Area (8-1) hosts Worthington at 7 p.m. today in Fairmont.
The Fairmont Area Cardinals downed Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 2-0 in boys junior varsity soccer action on Friday in Tracy.
Evan Ward scored the first goal of the game for the Fairmont, with assists from Derek Hunwardsen and Ben Mitchell.
Joe Nordquist netted the second Fairmont goal with assists from Peter Nielsen and Ben Timmerman.
Kyle Tromanhauser made 24 saves, while the offense tallied 10 shots on goal.

Christianson won the invitational's keeper contest and earned a place on the all-tournament lineup along with teammates Rachael Sauck, Kaylee Sauck and Lexi Johnson.
