To the Editor:
STEP, Inc. would like to publicly thank Valero and its 21 employees who came to our offices on Sept. 4 to help us with various chores.
As part of their "kickoff" for the United Way fund drive, they selected STEP, Inc. as a recipient of hours of volunteer help. They asked us for a list of chores that we needed to have done, met with us to clarify any questions, purchased all the supplies they needed to complete the chores, and showed up with 21 volunteers to complete the tasks. Some of the projects took longer than expected, so they will be coming back to complete those.
They painted, trimmed bushes, changed light bulbs, repaired doors, washed windows, hung bulletin boards and cleaned off our roof. We offered to feed them but they had that covered also.
As a private not-for-profit agency dependent on the Minnesota Legislature for funding, STEP has not an easy four to five years. With increased fuel prices and health care costs coupled with reduced funding from the Legislature, we have had to watch our dollars carefully. Having Valero's assistance is greatly appreciated. We would like to community and the Valero volunteers to know of our gratitude.
