FAIRMONT - Lincoln School is no more. In its place stands the Lincoln Building.
In July, Fairmont Area Schools sold Lincoln to George and Gayla Properties for $11,100. The district had vacated the building before last school year and moved students to the newly constructed Fairmont Elementary.
A previous effort to sell the site was unsuccessful, until the city of Fairmont changed the zoning to allow businesses to operate within the residential neighborhood.
The new owners plan to continue renting out space to the building's current occupants - Stepping Stones Learning Center and Head Start - and advertise for additional tenants.
"Our plans are to lease out the rooms in there for small businesses or hobbies," said George Duncan.
Lincoln is the second school building the Meadville, Mo.-based business has repurposed.
"We found there is a lot of demand for something like that," Duncan said. "We pay all lights and utilities. It's just a cheaper way for someone to have a business."
The rent is $6 per square foot, with rooms ranging in size from 700 to 1,100 square feet. At that rate, one of the smaller rooms would cost $4,200 per year, or $350 per month.
The landlord will travel to Fairmont next week to meet with the tenants, look over the property, and search for someone to oversee the site, potentially a tenant interested in reducing their rent.
