SHERBURN - The Fairmont Cardinal girls tennis team swept the singles matches to help pace a 5-2 nonconference win over the Martin County West Mavericks on Tuesday in Sherburn.
Jill Paris sealed the win for the Cardinals with her strong serve at fourth singles, defeating Harley Holtz, 6-3, 6-0.
"Jill really surprised me today with her serve. (Monday) she had an asthma attack, but today she is showing me how strong of a server she is and that is great," said Fairmont coach Kathy Krezel.

The Mavericks' second doubles team of Shawna Dressen and Emily Lawrence netted the first win of the meet, downing Andrea Carstensen and Micaela Gochanour, 6-1, 6-0.
"Sometimes in matches, you run up against opponents that are getting to every shot. That is what happened at second doubles today. There was nothing we could do about the opponent, so we tried to just keep working on our game," said Krezel.
Fairmont's first and second singles grabbed the team lead with decisive victories. Aubrey Green took the No. 1 singles match over Kelci Russenberger, 6-3, 6-0, while Allison Moeller defeated Megan Suter at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
"In all of our singles matches, we started out really well and got the lead. Then we didn't play as well and let them get back into matches," said Krezel. "They were able to see what was happening and made the changes though, which is a good thing."
The Mavericks took the first doubles match, with KaLeigh Russenberger and Jennifer Hagen beating Briana Gratz and Sophie Shelgren, 6-3, 6-2.
Missy Viesselman sped through a 6-0, 6-1 third-singles win over Bailey Ebeling, giving Fairmont a 3-2 team lead with two matches left on the court.
Shantel Quist and Abby Fitzgerald earned the fifth and final match victory at No. 3 doubles, defeating Ily Schlenk and Alissa Russenberger, 6-3, 6-4.
"There was a lot of improvement today from (Monday's) game. I'm glad we have a practice day (today) now that we know some of the things we need to work on. But today was a lot better," said Krezel.
Fairmont (1-1) travels to Worthington for a 4:30 p.m. meet on Thursday. Martin County West (0-1) travels to Blue Earth Area for a 4:30 p.m. meet on Thursday.
