FAIRMONT - Located at the corner of Blue Earth Avenue and State Street in Fairmont, the former Bryan's Pharmacy site is prime property for a business.
Nate Fett recently purchased the building, with plans to open Fairmont Coin Laundry by Dec. 1.
"It's a little rough right now," Fett said as he surveyed the damage he had accomplished since this weekend.
A?LITTLE?CLEANUP?— Nate Fett works on cleaning up the old Bryan’s Pharmacy after tearing out the interior furnishings. Fairmont Coin Laundry will open at the location in December, according to Fett, the owner.
Fett is tearing out the interior pharmacy furnishings, but a contractor will finish the job.
"It's pretty easy to destroy stuff but putting it together is a fine art," he said.
When Fairmont Coin Laundry is complete, the 24-hour facility will house 20-some washing machines, ranging in capability from 20 pounds up to 60, and the accompanying dryers.
Laundromats are something of a family business for Fett, who grew up on a farm south of Austin. When he was still a boy, his father purchased an appliance store and then expanded into the laundry business, building about 10 laundromats, including three in Austin.
"My dad prefers to call them coin-operated machines," Fett said. "There's an old stigma that goes with laundromats."
The Fetts have worked to overcome that stigma. They keep their buildings clean, well lit and nicely furnished, including satellite television for their patrons to keep themselves occupied while they wait.
Fett discovered the Fairmont site on a recreational trip to the area.
"I come here hunting a lot," he said.
The old pharmacy was an ideal spot, and Fairmont seemed like a good size to support a new laundromat.
"This is probably the best location we've seen so far," Fett said.
