Fair parking was outrageous

August 22, 2012

To the Editor: I have helped with the parking at the Martin County Fair for three years now. I was wondering:?Since when have fair vendors become more important than our handicapped and elderly? I was appalled to discover that the small area for handicapped parking — up against the fair building on the north side lot — was cut in half to accommodate vendors. On senior day, that small lot was filled quickly, so then where were we suppose to put handicapped people and seniors who have trouble walking? Way out in the boondocks. I personally turned many away and felt helpless to give them an option suitable for their condition. I think, at the very least, the fair board should give them more space, such as the whole first row, in addition to the whole area up against the building to the northwest corner. Vendors can walk much better than our handicapped. They can unload and park out away as they sit at a booth during the day. At least think ahead about senior day and reserve the front rows for them.
