To the Editor:
I lived on the corner of Lair Road and Shoreacres for 15 years. When we found out what the city was proposing for the new bridge, we realized there could be another alternative.
I called my councilman and showed him my idea, which he thought was a much better plan. The plan was to turn the bridge to the north and connect it to Shoreacres across from Rona Court. This would have eliminated the purchase of a house, gas line relocation and disruption of the Channel Inn's business. This plan also would have given the Channel Inn upfront parking (no need to cross a street). It also would not force my friends out of the house they have been living in for over 20 years. My councilman took this idea to the city and was told flat out that it wouldn't work. No reason why, just no.
I sold my house on the corner and moved out of town two years ago because I realized the height and new location of the bridge would have lights shining in our windows when cars come over the bridge at night. With no stop signs on Lair Road, the traffic speed will be terrible. I hope no one gets hurt trying to cross the street.
It's still not to late to change this bridge location. Speak out now.
