Free 4 All aims to help families in need

August 2, 2012

FAIRMONT - It's a "Free 4 All" at Fairmont's Evangelical Covenant Church Saturday.

As part of the church's community outreach day, the congregation has gathered gently used clothing and small household items to simply give away to those in need.

"It's an effort to assist people in need who are struggling," said Debra Engman, one of the organizers of the Free 4 All event. "I read about it in a booklet, and when I first read it, I was struck by how it paralleled what Jesus did for us. We give away items, but He sacrificed himself for salvation for all our sins, to all those who repent. ... In a way, this Free 4 All giveaway is spiritual for us, because all of us are needy spiritually."

"Our church congregation loves Fairmont and the surrounding community, and we want to give back," added Georgie Pfaffinger, another member of the Free 4 All committee. "It's kind of our own 'pay it forward.'"

The organizers indicated the Free 4 All is the first annual, meaning the event could become a occurence event if there is a great enough response.

"We think we've collected enough items, but we just want to get the word out about it," Engman said. "We hope to be a blessing to those who have a need."

The Free 4 All will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Covenant Church, located at 901 Woodland Avenue, Fairmont. Enter through the north doors. For more information, contact the church at (507) 235-6407.
