JACKSON - Wilma M. Vachuska, 87, of Jackson passed away at her home on Wednesday, July 25, 2012. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson is in charge of the arrangements.
WILMA MAY (WILLIAMS) VACHUSKA was born on November 12, 1924, in Clay County, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Edla (Haberman) Williams. She attended country school in Middletown Township, Jackson County, and later graduated from Jackson High School about 1943. After high school, Wilma worked at the Jackson Cafe and for Minnesota Egg Corporation. She then attended Mankato State Teachers College for 2 years, graduating in 1947. Her first teaching job was in Sioux Valley. On June 25, 1949, Wilma was united in marriage to Vernon Vachuska at the Salem Lutheran Parsonage. After her marriage, she continued to teach in Enterprise, Kimball, and Wisconsin townships until 1957. Later, Wilma went back to school to get her Bachelors Degree in education and graduated from Mankato State College in 1970. She then taught in the Faribault school system for eight years, coming home to the family farm outside of Jackson every weekend. She then worked for the Blume Candy Company, Univac and then the Jackson Hospital Nursing Home before retiring. Wilma passed away at her home on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 13 days.
Wilma was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Jackson. She was also a member of the NEA and MEA. Wilma supported the Arbor Day Foundation and enjoyed planting trees and watching them grow. For a few years, she and Vernon would travel south to the Mission, Texas area and spend their winters. Every now and then, she would jump into the semi with her son, Paul, and travel the east coast and south to see the sights. Wilma enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, canning and preserving the harvest, cooking and nutrition; she could also be found helping out around the farm.
Wilma is survived by her husband of 63 years, Vernon Vachuska of Jackson; two sons, Peter (Colleen) Vachuska of West Bend, Wis., and Paul Vachuska of Jackson; two grandchildren, Jenna Vachuska of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Karl Vachuska of West Bend, Wis.; one brother, Carl (Irene) Williams of Jackson, Minn.; four sisters, Bernice Wewetzer of Lynd, Minn., Thelma Dunker of Petersburg, Minn., Roberta Nigon of Boulder, Colo., and Maxine Jenkins of Bonita, Fla.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents.
