State doing right thing

Obamacare is the law of the land until Republicans can repeal it. If they can repeal it. So the state of Minnesota is right to be moving forward with plans to create an online "health insurance marketplace." It would offer consumers and small businesses information about subsidies and options, and let them buy a policy.

The state needs to get its marketplace ready by mid-November to avoid being forced to adopt a federal one-size-fits-all model. We say move ahead. Minnesota can easily come up with something better than the feds can offer.

Great Fourth traditions

We offer our thanks and congratulations to those who help to make the Fourth of July an enjoyable experience for people living in the Fairmont area, as well as in northern Iowa.

The Heritage Acres celebration in Fairmont and the Armstrong Fourth of July event are good traditions. We especially appreciate the hard work of organizers and volunteers who put in long days in some hot, sticky weather.

Finally, kudos, of course, to the Fairmont fireworks organizers for another great show.

Daycares must act

The Minnesota Department of Human Services is calling for more training at home daycares, as well as better compliance with safe-sleeping regulations. Nearly all deaths at licensed child-care facilities in the past 10 years in Minnesota occurred in home daycares.

We can't imagine the horror of being a parent whose child dies at a daycare, especially when something as simple as a little more information or training would have saved that young life. We hope all daycare providers understand the stakes in this matter and will take action to ensure better safety. Lives and livelihoods are depending on it.
