Visitation will begin 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2012, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and will continue until the time of service.

John passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2012, from melanoma, at Trimont Health Care Center in Trimont, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

John Joseph Larson was born Jan. 3, 1966, in Estherville, Iowa, the son of Laverne and Bonnie (Zimmer) Larson. John was welcomed home to the family farm near Armstrong, Iowa, by his siblings, Lynda, Jim and Bruce.

John attended school in Swea City and graduated from North Kossuth High School in 1985. While in high school, John spent one year as a foreign exchange student in Durban, South Africa, where he traveled extensively throughout South Africa and bordering countries. Following his graduation, John took classes at Arizona State University. While there, he tried out for the choir and was fortunate to receive a spot. The choir performed all over the United States and also through Russia and surrounding countries. During his time with the choir, John found a passion for travel and, following his education, he worked for American West Airlines for 13 years and would later work for Winnebago Motor Homes, FedEx, and even lived in China where he worked in quality control for a ceramics company. While in Asia, John earned his certificate to teach the English language. In the spring and fall, John would find his way home, to help his family on the farm. His travels took him to 49 states and many countries.

In his spare time, John enjoyed fishing, camping and tending to his flowers and garden. He also enjoyed book study at the Fairmont Film Society. John had a special place in his heart for his dogs, pet raccoon, Einstein, and cat. John's zest for life and sense of adventure will be greatly missed by those who loved him and called him friend.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Bonnie Larson of Fairmont, Minn., and Laverne Larson of Swea City, Iowa; siblings, Lynda Cherne and her husband, Mark of Hudson, Wis., Jim Larson and his wife, Patty of Armstrong, Iowa, and Bruce Larson and his wife, Diane of Armstrong, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Cody (Bethany) Larson and their daughter, Makayla, Heather (Adam) Van Wyk and their daughter, Grace, Amanda (Nate) Howard, Nick Larson, Jake Larson, Gretchen Larson, Rachel Larson, Travis Larson, Ryan Larson, and Jared Larson; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and many friends. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

John was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Gerda Larson; and maternal grandparents, Lambert and Matilda Zimmer.
